When two artists unite across generations to collaborate on a project that will go on to be significant to so many lives, it can be easy at times to underestimate the power of timing, patience and "imperfection" that goes into the creation of such a project.
Not wanting to fuck shit up in the presence of a musical legend, not only of the Houston music scene, but perhaps as important to the last decade of hip-hop's evolution as any singular figure, is about as mind wracking as one might think.
To be frank, helping curate this 2015 representation of Houston's rich underground music scene put my ass back in school, and Kay was the professor. Everything heard on this project is a direct reflection of where the game was when DEA (Dead End Alliance) was bringing Houston one of its first and finest homegrown sounds, what it became once that sound found its way to ears and hearts of diehard fans around the world, and where the evolution of that sound now rests with the new generation of aspiring artists now ready to take the helm for a sound that is wholly their own.
From the rise and fall of what would have been one of Houston's most reputable forces in hip-hop, to the influences of pivotal figures like DJ Screw and the original SUC (Screwed Up Click), 11911 is representative of the hearts, minds and souls of artists who could only tell it like they saw it, for better or worse. With an entire legacy in his hands, and as the last original flag bearer of the DEA movement, Kay K took up the gauntlet to ensure that the story continues to be told from the perspective of those that live every word they spit. Keeping it real is the only way. This authenticity can't be duplicated. Stay down for the come up.
